Looking at an image of a painting in a magazine I said to myself "That is a terrible painting". Then looking further I see that the artist was Picasso and the price is 1.? million US dollars. What does that say about this? Would a buyer be buying a painting or the name??
One of the most common questions asked of artists is "How long did it take you to paint that picture?". To answer the artist often adds up the years it took to become an artist plus how many years of experience since then, erhaps
responding with 40 years, which isn't a very satisfying answer to the inquirer. It also seems evasive although it is a truthful answer. I will work on a painting for two or three weeks and then set it aside,
waiting for the painting to "speak to me" or get someone to critique it for
me, but the best paintings seem to "flow" easily and naturally as if they came from another dimension and spontaneously appeared on the canvas.
