Why do you think I date everything I make? Because it is not enough to know an artist's works. One must also know when he made them, why, how, under what circumstances, No doubt there will be some day a science called "the science of man", perhaps, which will seek above all to get a deeper understanding of man via man-the-creator. I often think of that science, and I want the documentation I leave to posterity to be as complete as possible. That's why I date everything I make.
Pablo Picasso, 1943
Brassai, Conversations with Picasso, p.133.

He was always asking how old Picasso had been when he had painted a cetain picture. When he was told he always said, "I am not as old as that yet. I will do as much when I am that age."
