"One note is simply a colour. Two notes make a cord, and life." Henry Matisse, on comparing art to music, which was commonly done by him and many other artists including Kandinsky.

"How long did it take you to paint that picture?"is a common question asked of artists. To answer the artist often adds up the years it took to become an artist plus how many years of experience since then, perhaps responding with 40 years, which isn't a very satisfying answer to the inquirer. I will work on a painting for two or three weeks and then set it aside, waiting for the painting to "speak to me" or get someone to critique it for me, but the best paintings seem to "flow" easily and naturally as if they came from another dimension and spontaneously appeared on the canvas.
